FIRE AND RAIN

They say life is a matter of perspective. For instance, we could say, “Spring has sprung.” Or we could say, “The tax man cometh” (April 15th is just around the corner). I wait for April all year long because it is the month of the annual preaching conference I attend. For me there is something redemptive about it. It is my time to be fed. This year I will be in D.C. listening to Barry Black (Chaplain to the U.S. Senate), Chuck Colson and Rick Warren (actually there are plenty of others who I prefer to hear but you wouldn’t recognize their names). I have learned that sometimes the most significant speakers are not the most well known speakers.
Speaking of preachers. Pastor Justin will be bringing forth the word of the Lord on Sunday. A challenging text (1 Cor. 8:1-13) that recognizes the diversity of the body of Christ but calls us to mutual submissiveness to Christ. He is daring to tackle the subject of “the idolatry of Christian liberty.” How often we forget that we are supposed to be worshiping Christ and not the freedom He has won for us.
As for me, Isaiah preached to me this morning. It reminded me of James Taylor.
“Ive seen fire and Ive seen rain
Ive seen sunny days that I thought would never end
Ive seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that Id see you again
Wont you look down upon me, jesus
Youve got to help me make a stand
Youve just got to see me through another day
My bodys aching and my time is at hand
And I wont make it any other way”
Here is how Isaiah put it: “Fear not, for I (God) have redeemed you; I have called you by your name: You are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you. For I am the Lord you God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.” (Isaiah 43:1-3)
Those are words from God that help me make it through another day. WHB
