TANGO Ephesians 5:21-33
Posted on February 7, 2009
Tango, an elaborate dance of latin-american descent (Argentina) consisting two inter-connected partners. Marriage is like the tango. It takes two interconnected people who are working together in time towards a common goal.
In Ephesians 5 Paul refers to marriage/Christ’s relationship to his church as a ‘mystery’. In that sense marriage is more art than it is science. But behind great art is a bit of science. Remember there are only four basic colors. What you do with them is art. In the tango there are basic steps. What you do with it becomes art. Someone once said, “the tango takes a shot time to learn but a lifetime to master.” Sounds a lot like marriage to me.
So, here are a couple of steps for a healthy marriage. First, marriage is for giving not getting. Our culture is plagued with a sense of entitlement. Too often people go into marriage to get something. Not that it’s wrong to want something just that it overshadows what God has prescribed for marriage. Husbands loving their wife and wives reverencing their husband prioritizes the giving, not the getting. Secondly, marriage is rooted in grace not law. Far too often we will give as long as we get. Usually it is just a matter of time before the giving drives up. The problem here is that where there is law we usually try to get away with doing the bare minimum. How little can I give and still get what I want? Do you see a catastrophe brewing?
This is largely an ego issue. God knows what we need. Husbands need to love their wife because she needs security, trust, affection and usefulness (in a nutshell). On the other hand wives are to reverence their husband. He needs admiration, support and loyalty. He needs someone who will believe in him without having to fight for it. She needs someone who will love her for who she is, not what the world insists she be.
The goal of all of this is the reverence of Christ (21). That’s what kind of got Paul’s whole discourse started. In that case marrige is an act of worship. Loving and reverencing one another are core to a healthy marriage. Be a conduit of grace in the life of your spouse. Grace highlights the reality that we don’t deserve reverence or love. But God knows we need it and he delights in it. WHB
