BULLETIN INSERT – FCC Prayer Requests
This is an update on Tyler Woods. A young boy that we have been praying for, for some time now. He is the nephew of one of our members. Tyler was accepted into an experimental chemo drug study that has worked to stop cell growth in other types of cancer. It has not been tested on Tyler’s type that we know of, but we are willing to give it a try. The other chemo treatments have not been successful, so we are hoping this one will be. He was in the hospital for tests and scans today, in preparation for his new chemo treatments starting 9/21/09. It is IV once a week at the hospital. Tyler has been in more pain the last few days, his coughing is back, and so is his shortness of breath. The doctor recommended we start Tyler with oxygen as needed and at bed time. Laying down is his worst position and time for breathing struggles. Please pray for his pain and endurance! Thank you from the Woods’ family.
This request is from our Missionary, T P Thomaskutty in India.

Subject: Thanks
Dear Pastor,
Greetings. Thanks for the continuous support for the ministry. We are thankful to God for His faithfulness in meeting our ministry needs during the last financial year. It is amazing to see how God provided even through God’s people whom we have never met. We are grateful to God’s people. We do not have anything to give you back than to say “Thank You & we love You”. Yesterday our staff met together for a day of fasting & prayer. Every month we meet together once only for intercessory prayer. Especially we have prayed for you and for all friends who try to raise the funds to support various ongoing ministries. We assure you of our prayers. We have many special needs but we dare not to share with you for not knowing the financial position on your side. Our God has promised to meet our needs as we totally depend on Him. It is His ministry and we are assured that the Lord is more concerned about the ministry than what we are. That gives us confidence. The situation in MD’s village is not getting better. The entire village is against 16 of our believers. Some of them are very strong in faith but the pressure & threat is so much that they need God’s help to withstand. The latest news is that the village’s upper class people want to reconvert our believers back into their fold by force. We have to wait and see how God overrules man’s plan. Many are praying with fasting for God’s deliverance for his people. We don’t have a worship place of our own in this town and that is a real handicap. At present we worship in a rented facility in the town. The problem village is 5 miles from the town. We are looking for a piece of land where we can make a worship place but the cost of the land in town is more than we can afford. Pray. We need many prayers for MD and his family-our missionaries there. Kindly convey our love to all friends who know us and pray for us. With love, TP

MAKIN’ THE GRADE

“Anyone who comes to me, hears my words and does them…is like a man who built his house upon a rock” (paraphrase mine from Luke 6:46-48). Did you catch that? Jesus says, the person who “does” his words is like the man who builds his house upon a firm foundation.
I anticipate what we would expect to hear is “believes.” Of course even the demons believe. So, maybe James is right when he says, “faith without works is dead.” For some time western Christianity has had a love affair with knowledge. As if the more you know the more spiritual you are. Some of us remember having to memorize gobs of verses from Awana or WOL. It’s what got rewarded. But in the Sermon on the Mount it seems to be behavior that Jesus promotes and insists the Father rewards. No wonder no matter what tradition of Christianity you come out of this text causes problems. We keep coming away guilty.
In the movie “Batman Begins” Bruce Wayne is confronted by his boyhood friend for his philanthropy while Gotham crumbles around them because of poverty and crime. Out of this scene comes one of the best lines in the movie, ‘Bruce, it’s what you do that defines you.’ Somewhere along the line Christianity became more of a thinking faith than an active faith. Something I don’t think Jesus ever intended.
The Sermon On The Mount brings three quadrants of life to a crossroads; relationships, behavior and space. Space is home, work, school, some aspect of location. It could be the grocery store. Behavior is what you do, how you react. What those who occupy the space with you see and experience in light of your presence. Which brings us to relationships. The quality of our relationships rests largely upon what we are doing in them (not what we think of them). Sure it takes two to tango, but somebody has to ask you to dance. Perhaps that’s what Jesus is saying when he says, “love your enemies, be merciful, don’t judge, and forgive.”
At the end of “Batman Begins” there is another run in with Bruce Wayne’s boyhood friend. But this time he is the Batman. He’s just saved his old friend and a young boy from a pack of maniacs. It’s there he tells his friend that it’s what he does that defines him. This is all deeper than one may think. Part of Batman’s struggle is about who he is going to be. What is he going to do? Be Bruce Wayne the playboy billionaire or be Batman the Dark Knight. We know what he chose because it’s what he does that defines him.
In some way even Jesus had to clarify who he was. To many people he was Jesus, the son of Joseph the carpenter. But he knew he was the Christ, the son of God. Quite a difference if you ask me. Truth is, it’s not the words making us follow Jesus. I kind of doubt that phrases like “love your enemy” and “judge not” are getting you out of bed on Sunday morning. It’s the deed. It’s the cross that makes us followers of Jesus. Without the deed, the words are meaningless. It’s not how much you know, but what you do that defines you. WHB

It will be great to have Dan and Rachel Zuch on Sunday. They are on furlough from Austria and it has been about 3 years since we last saw them. I look forward to seeing them getting more insight on the work there. For FCC this has been a long term relationship with the Zuch’s. We have been partnering for some time together in an effort to forward the gospel and see the Church thrive in Austria.
Next week we start our new series, “Back to School Special.” When I was a kid I remember watching, “after school specials.” The intent is to focus on life-long learning as a follower of Christ. Of course we will have to figure out how Jesus viewed life-long learning in the first place. Who knows, you might be surprised. Find out what our rabbi (Jesus) has to say. WHB
