Lost and Found
Jurgen Moltmann had a secular upbringing in Germany. In 1944, he was drafted into Hitler’s army and sent into battle. After American soldiers captured Moltmann, a chaplain gave him a small Bible containing the New Testament and the Psalms.
Jesus walked off the pages and into the young man’s heart. “I didn’t find Christ,” Moltmann said. “He found me.” The gospel was such life-giving good news that when the war ended, Moltmann became a Christian theologian, teaching in both German and American seminaries.
Moltmann calls Easter “God’s protest against death” and “the beginning of laughter for the redeemed.”
